THE SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY
GROUP
is a private, therapist owned and directed professional
practice that works in a cooperation with physicians to help
patients reach their full potential for recovery.
Since 1979 we have received referrals from
over 500 orthopedic physicians, osteopaths and podiatrists including doctors for professional sports teams and dance
companies. We specialize in treating all types of orthopedic diagnosis including
joint dysfunction, shoulder, ankle and knee injuries, lower back and neck pain,
and numerous other disorders of the musculoskeletal system. We've treated more
knees, ankles and shoulders than almost any other therapy center in the New York
Metro region.
Not just for athletes, sports therapy is often the physician’s
choice for orthopedic and surgical patients with a strong desire to function as
well as they did before—or better.
PROFESSIONAL
The physical therapists of the Sports Physical Therapy Group share the hard work
and commitment needed to accomplish each individual patient’s goals. They take
a personal and direct approach to each patient and they truly take pride in
their patient’s successes. Our therapists are licensed professionals who
specialize in the treatment of orthopedic and sports related injuries. They
receive ongoing training to update therapeutic and manual skills, and are active
in continuing education programs. Many of our therapists also teach in physical
therapy programs at local colleges and universities.
PRO-ACTIVE
All of our Sports Physical Therapy Group offices motivate, challenge and
encourage our patients to take an active role in their own recovery. Your
recovery does not end as soon as you are out of the physical therapist’s
direct care. You and your therapist will design an individualized conditioning
program for you to continue at home or at a fitness facility. In addition, we
also show you how to prevent the reoccurrence of injury by teaching you
how to avoid hurting yourself at work or play. Our staff encourages all of our
patients to become health-conscious people and to increase their overall fitness
level, muscular strength and endurance.
WHAT PATIENTS ASK ABOUT
PHYSICAL THERAPY
Q. Why do I need it?
A. - To reduce or
eliminate pain
- To improve mobility and function
- To restore strength
- To complete the healing process
- To return to your favorite sport
- To help prevent re-injury
Q. What actually happens in physical therapy?
A. In a typical session, a physical therapist
will assess your needs for that day's treatment. Tight muscles are stretched
manually. If necessary, therapeutic massage and/or joint mobilization may be
performed. You might be guided through exercises with weights or resistance
equipment. Balance or posture exercises may also be given as appropriate. Pain
control is addressed with various modalities including the use of electric
stimulation and ultrasound. The program changes as you progress so that you
remain challenged and motivated.
Q. Does it work?
A. Most patients attain the goals that are set.
Your results depend on many factors, from the type and severity of the problem
to how well you comply with medical advice.
Q. Does it hurt?
A. New techniques in medicine and physical
therapy have significantly reduced the pain and disability encountered after an
injury or surgery. Working on an injured body part can be somewhat
uncomfortable; but patients who avoid formal rehabilitation are inviting more
stiffness, pain and long term disability.
Q. How long does it take?
A. The nature and extent of the problem
determines how many sessions you will need. Restoring functional use to an
injured body part, or returning your body to a pain-free state occurs at
different rates for different people. (Your insurance company may also have
additional guidelines regarding the extent of your physical therapy coverage.)
Therapist-recommended home exercises will also speed your recovery.
Q. Does my insurance cover it?
A. Most insurers will
cover physical therapy; check your individual plan. We
participate in several health plans, including Medicare, Oxford, HIP,
United, HealthNet and many others. Click on "Insurance
Questions" in our table of

YOUR TREATMENT
PROGRAM WILL INCLUDE:
1. Evaluation
A comprehensive biomechanical examination
determines how far you have come on the road to recovery, and how far you have
to go. This examination determines the parameters of your injury or condition,
including scientific testing for strength, mobility, joint range of motion,
ligamentous integrity, balance, reflexes, and balance. During this time patient
and therapist set goals for the rehabilitation.
2. Rehabilitation
Sessions with your own therapist help to strengthen weakened muscles, increase
flexibility, and improve mobility. The physical therapist may use a variety of
treatment techniques to aid in your recovery. These include therapeutic
exercise, joint mobilization and range-of-motion exercises, cardiovascular
endurance training, therapeutic massage, and biofeedback. Modalities, including
ultrasound, electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, and traction can also be applied
during the treatment program to help relieve pain.
3. Education
We explain your injury so that you understand what happened to your body and how
physical therapy can speed your recovery. We also provide specific guidelines
for continuing your progress at home between sessions to either help you return
to your former level of activity or help you surpass your prior level of
function.
